A Day in Dresden

Although Ainslie has been a champ so far on our trip, we weren’t quite sure what to expect from her on a full day of sightseeing. So, for our first excursion beyond Leipzig we chose a town not too far from home, Dresden. It proved to be a great choice. Although most of the city was destroyed during a horrific bombing raid near the end of World War II, restoration work has brought a beautiful city back from the destruction.

The weather has been a lot warmer the last few days, so we swapped Ainslie’s beanie for a sun hat and hit the streets.

Here’s a few highlights:

We climbed to the top of the tower in the Kreuzkirche and had some fantastic views of the city to start our day.
The Frauenkirche was an important protestant church, and in the last fifteen years it has been painstakingly rebuilt from almost nothing to mirror the original. We’re not sure, but we believe that the black bricks are those that were salvaged from the rubble of the original building while the white bricks were brought in for the reconstruction.
The streets of Dresden reminded us of Prague, there’s something impressive around every corner.

And statues decorating the rooftops of many buildings. It’s amazing to see the detail of the restoration work.
Janae thinks that the Zwinger is the Versailles of Dresden.
The town also had several beautiful parks that were great for “Ainslie-breaks.”
(“Thank you, thank you very much. . .”)
We also took some breaks for Mom and Dad to enjoy some ice cream.
There were plenty of souvenir stands to browse as well. The city was simply amazing.
And, at the end of the day, we were all pretty tired.
The trip was a great success, so we’re busy planning the next adventure . . .
